The cast steel ball is produced by casting. It’s usually used in cement plants, power plants, chemical plants, quartz sand factory, silica sand factory and so on.

The cast steel ball can be divided into three categories because of the different chromium content: high chrome steel ball, medium chrome steel ball and low chrome steel ball. However, because of differences in chromium content of the cast steel ball, their characteristics are not the same. Each of the cast steel ball is described separately as below:

1. High chrome steel balls’ quality indicators

The chromium content of the high chrome steel ball is greater than or equal to 10.0%. The carbon content is between 1.80% and 3.20%. According to national standards, the hardness of the high chromium steel ball must be not less than 58HRC and the impact value should be greater than or equal to 3.0j/cm2. To achieve the hardness, high chrome steel ball must use high temperature quenching and tempering. At present, there are two methods of high chrome steel ball quenching in domestic, including oil quenching and wind quenching. If the test hardness of the high chrome ball is less than 54HRC, it means that it has not been quenched.

2. Medium chrome steel balls’ quality indicators

The chromium content of the medium chrome steel ball ranges from 3.0% to 7.0% and the carbon content is between 1.80% and 3.20%. Its impact value should not be less than 2.0j/cm2. National standards require the hardness of the medium chrome ball should be greater than or equal to 47HRC. To ensure the quality, the medium chrome steel ball should be high temperature tempering to eliminate casting stress. If the surface of the steel ball is black and red, it is proved that the steel ball is treated by high temperature tempering. If the surface of the steel ball still has a metallic color, we can judge the steel ball is not treated.

3. Low chrome steel balls’ quality indicators

In general, the chromium content of the low chrome steel ball ranges from 0.5% to 2.5% and the carbon content is between 1.80% and 3.20%. Therefore, according to national standards, the hardness of the low chrome steel ball should not be less than 45HRC and the impact value should be not less than 1.5j/cm2. The low chrome steel ball also need high temperature tempering to ensure quality. This treatment can eliminate casting stress. If the surface of the steel ball is deepred, it is proved that the steel ball is treated by high temperature tempering. If the surface of the steel ball still has a metallic color, we can judge the steel ball is not treated.
